As tariffs drive up the prices of essentials like diapers, formula, and baby gear, families across the country are facing tough choices during the most critical years of their child’s development. Some big-ticket items can wait until prices come down—but baby necessities simply can’t. Even in uncertain economic times, one thing remains true: every baby deserves the best start in life, with the chance to play, grow, and learn. Childhood development is time-sensitive. It can’t be paused until prices stabilize.
The first five years are a period of incredible brain growth. Strong attachment to a caregiver and rich opportunities for play and exploration are critical for hitting developmental milestones and preparing for kindergarten. As a pediatric occupational therapist, and passionate advocate for child development, I’m here to help families navigate these rising costs—because babies deserve to thrive without breaking the bank.
How Tariffs Are Already Affecting Babies
In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) where I practice, I’m seeing firsthand how tariffs are impacting even the tiniest patients. Many preterm babies require specialty formulas—most of which are imported from Europe. In the past, formula was exempt from tariffs because it’s a necessity, but current tariffs do not offer those protections, which could drive prices out of reach for many families.
Diapers and wipes are also affected. Even if assembled in the U.S., the materials are often sourced internationally, driving up costs and causing backorders. Parents may soon see smaller packaging for the same price. Strollers, high chairs, and especially car seats—essential and non-negotiable for safe hospital discharge—are also largely imported and may become harder to afford. Used car seats are never recommended because safety cannot be guaranteed.
Even toys, which foster exploration and early learning, may become more expensive or less available. Combined with the already high cost of childcare, these added financial pressures are deeply stressful for families.
Creative, Budget-Friendly Solutions
Families need affordable solutions that don’t compromise development or safety. Here are a few ways to stretch your budget while supporting your child’s growth:
- Diapers: Explore reusable cloth diapers, buy in bulk from warehouse stores, or try store brands (start with a small pack to ensure a good fit). If diapers feel out of reach, check for local diaper banks and nonprofit support.
- Formula: There’s often less wiggle room here. Ask your healthcare provider for samples, search for manufacturer coupons and discounts, and connect with food banks or WIC (Women, Infants, and Children), which offers free formula to qualifying families. Never dilute formula to stretch it—always talk to your pediatrician if you’re struggling.
- Gear and Toys: Consider toy swaps, community gear exchanges, or making simple DIY toys. Seek out open-ended toys that grow with your child, maximizing play value and saving money. Some favorites include the Baby Einstein 4-in-1 Kickin’ Tunes Play Gym, Baby Einstein Curiosity Table Activity Station, and Ingenuity’s Beanstalk 6-in-1 High Chair. These products are thoughtfully designed to evolve alongside your little one.
- Remember: children learn the most from real-life experiences and meaningful interactions, not from expensive gadgets. Parks, libraries, hiking trails, and free community events are fantastic learning opportunities.
Advocacy and Community Connection
Families don’t have to navigate these challenges alone. One powerful step is sharing your story—writing to your local representative, attending community meetings, or joining parent advocacy groups. Lawmakers need to hear from the real families impacted by rising costs.
Never hesitate to advocate for your child, even if that means asking for help or speaking up. Parents are resilient, creative, and strong. With the right tools, support, and a little village spirit, we can make sure every child continues to grow, learn, and shine—no matter what the headlines say.
